Free Inquiry Post #8
Looking back over this semester, this inquiry project has ended up being one that sounds simple at first but actually sticks with you.
Going into it, I knew I wanted something shareable and ongoing, not just a one time assignment. Posting weekly and building it over time allowed for me to put some time into it and give space for it to grow naturally instead of feeling rushed or forced. The quick notes people added about when they make a dish or who it reminds them of ended up being just as important as the recipes themselves.
At this point, it does not feel like a “finished” project, which I actually view as a positive. It is something I can keep adding to, and others can too. It feels useful, not just something that gets handed in and forgotten.
From a teaching perspective, this is something I would absolutely bring into a classroom. It fits easily into multiple areas without needing to stretch it. In a nutrition unit, students could break down ingredients, look at food groups, and think about balance. In socials, it opens up conversations about culture and diversity in a way that is directly connected to students’ lives.
It also builds community without needing a big setup. Asking students to share a recipe that matters to them is simple, but it gives them a way to bring their home life into the classroom. It also gives other students a chance to learn from each other in a way that feels natural.
I would love to do this with a class and have a “restaurant day” where students can bring in their dish for the class to enjoy. This is something I would actually use, and something I think students would love to take part in and also use after being done with the class and could be a memory of their peers that year!
