Weekly Reflection #7
The past week we explored gamification in classrooms and how game based learning can be implemented. Gamification is used to increase motivation in learners through integrating games into classrooms. We had a guest take us through an educational Minecraft game. We were shown how it can be used in a school-based setting and the ways it can allow us can hit our curriculum in a way that engaged and enhances student learning. I think it is so interesting to see how games such as these can be integrated in the classroom and help students have fun while learning.
The game I chose to go through was the “Bad News” (https://www.getbadnews.com/en/intro) game and it was an interesting experience. The game puts you in the role of someone trying to build an online following by spreading misinformation. As I played, I was introduced to tactics like emotional manipulation, polarization, conspiracy theories, and pretending to be a credible source. Seeing how easily these strategies can attract attention helped me better understand how misinformation spreads and what to look out for when evaluating information online. Using this game in a classroom would be useful because it helps students recognize how misinformation works and builds their critical thinking when evaluating information online.
